Text Box

Text Box refers to a user interface (UI) element or control that allows users to input or display text data. It is a key component in forms, search bars, chat interfaces, and other parts of an application where text-based user interaction is required. The behavior of text boxes needs to be thoroughly tested to ensure that they function correctly, provide the expected user experience, and meet various usability and validation standards.

Types of Text Boxes:

  • Single-line Text Box: A simple text field that allows only one line of text, commonly used for names, emails, or search fields.
  • Multi-line Text Box: A larger text field that allows multiple lines of text, typically used for comments, messages, or longer input like descriptions.
  • Password Text Box: A specialized text box that masks input characters (e.g., dots or asterisks) to protect sensitive information.
  • Search Box: A text box designed specifically for entering search queries, often paired with search suggestion features.

Key Aspects to Test in Text Boxes:

  1. Input Validation: Testing whether the text box correctly accepts valid inputs and rejects invalid ones (e.g., numeric-only fields should not accept alphabetic characters).
  2. Character Limits: Verifying that the text box enforces any predefined character limits or constraints, such as the maximum number of characters allowed.
  3. Data Formatting: Ensuring that the text box handles special characters (e.g., apostrophes, quotes, or symbols) properly and does not cause unexpected behavior.
  4. Default Text: Checking if the default value (if any) appears in the text box and disappears when the user starts typing, or if it remains as a placeholder.
  5. Auto-Complete and Suggestions: If applicable, testing auto-complete or suggestion features to ensure they provide accurate and helpful input options based on user input.
  6. Focus and Cursor Behavior: Testing the text box’s behavior when users interact with it, including ensuring that the cursor appears correctly and that the text box is focusable (can be selected by clicking or tabbing).
  7. Multi-line Input: For text boxes that support multiple lines, testing if the text box allows users to add line breaks or scroll through the input without issues.
  8. Security: Ensuring that text box inputs are sanitized and protected from injection attacks, such as SQL injection or cross-site scripting (XSS).
  9. Responsive Behavior: Verifying that the text box behaves consistently across different devices, screen sizes, and resolutions, particularly if it is part of a web or mobile application.
  10. Clear/Reset Functionality: Testing whether there are mechanisms (like a “Clear” or “Reset” button) to remove text entered into the text box.
