Branch Coverage

Branch Coverage is a white-box testing technique used to measure and ensure that every possible branch (decision outcome) in a program’s control flow is tested at least once during testing. It is a critical metric in structural testing that evaluates the effectiveness of test cases in covering all decision points, such as if and switch statements, and their corresponding outcomes (true/false or case-specific paths).

Key Characteristics of Branch Coverage:

  1. Focus on Decision Outcomes:
Branch Coverage emphasizes testing all possible outcomes of each decision in the code. For example:

    • In an if-else statement, both the true and false branches must be executed.
    • In a switch statement, all cases and the default case must be covered.
  2. Ensures Comprehensive Testing:
By requiring every branch to be tested, Branch Coverage helps uncover defects that could arise from untested paths in the control flow.
  3. Subset of Code Coverage:
Branch Coverage is a type of Code Coverage, which includes other techniques such as Statement Coverage and Path Coverage. While Statement Coverage ensures that all lines of code are executed, Branch Coverage goes further by focusing on the decision points.

Objectives of Branch Coverage:

  • To identify untested branches in the program’s control flow.
  • To ensure that all decision-making logic is validated.
  • To enhance the reliability and correctness of the software.

By ensuring that all decision outcomes are exercised, Branch Coverage contributes significantly to identifying and fixing defects early, thereby improving software quality and robustness.
